Highland Cathedral is written for Bb Bagpipe, Brass Quintet and optional drums. There is little music available for this instrumentation which is unfortunate as bagpipe and brass combine beautifully, both in traditional and contemporary settings.

The Great Highland Bagpipe chanter tunes to a scale of 9 notes, the tonic A of around 470-480Hz, as compared to a piano A4 of 440Hz. It is therefore necessary to play a Bb bagpipe chanter when playing with brass instruments
