It is March 2025. I am watching the systematic dismantling of our federal government, and all the achievements of the Civil Rights, Womens Rights, and Gay Rights movements of the past hundred years being erased too easily. I had been percolating some ideas and then sat down and wrote this piece. It is full of sadness and dismay. Don't let the dissonance offend you. Dissonance is rich with texture and expression and longing and hope.

Some of the melodic rhythms are inspired by this text:

The notes are easy. The intensity requires some maturity. The total play time is just short of 4 minutes. Due to the emotional heaviness of this piece, I would recommend it for formal concert settings only.

I conceived the piece for E-flat flute, two C flutes, and alto flute. However, I am also including extra parts for C flute and Bass flute in case you don't have access to an E-flat or alto. The richness of the bass would be a lovely addition to the ensemble anyway. I think I even prefer that. It is written for quartet, but feel free to expand to flute choir. You could also have piccolo double on the Flute 1 part (the C Flute part). The score is in concert pitch for all four parts.
