About this composition

Sonata for alto saxophone and piano «Requies» ( = Latin for 'rest' , in its accusative case «Requiem» = 'rest in' ), consists of two movements and was composed (2003-05, revised 2025) in memory of a friend, saxophonist [H.F.] .

The first movement, «Dies irae (the Day of Wrath)», is in sonata form.
It consists of a rapid and turbulent first theme and a gentle second theme that seems to emerge from the depths of the earth in search of peace.
After the second theme is exposited, it quickly leads to the development section, and which followed by an elaborate cadenza of saxophone solos with special techniques.
Then, reduced recapitulation section appears and disappears into the deep darkness.

The second movement, «Tarantella» is a kind of 'dance of death' in irregular time (7/8 time) based on the motif from the Gregorian chant «Dies irae (the Day of Wrath)».
The wildly dancing sounds transformes sometimes sweet, sometimes inorganic (12-tone series style fugato), and sometimes into a serene prayer.
However, at the end of the dance, the music violently falls into the abyss of death from which no one can escape.
