Product Description

Kite Flying is an original composition by Jacob Weber. This piece draws inspiration from the renowned Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi and the soundtracks of Studio Ghibli films in general.

The first section of Kite Flying" captures the exhilaration of a kite soaring through the sky, evoking a profound sense of weightlessness. The melody aims to instill wonder and freedom. The second section takes on a darker, more sinister tone, meant to conjure the image of an approaching storm and the fear of the unknown. This section modulates to the relative minor key to enhance this mood and employs polyrhythm to intensify the feeling of unease. The next section revisits the first, suggesting that the storm has passed and that one has regained flight, accompanied by a renewed sense of wonder and innocence. The penultimate section features a lighter atmosphere, designed to make the listener feel as though they are following the kite as it glides through the sky, discovering fresh sights along the journey. This effect is achieved by modulating to a closely related key and utilizing a different chord progression than in previous sections. This shift in the chord progression aids in conveying the sense of traveling to a new place and experiencing novel encounters. Finally, the last section presents a final restatement of the original theme, incorporating some variation to signal to the listener that they have returned home, now imbued with a new appreciation for the sky and the limitless freedom that comes with flying a kite.

This piece is intended for a saxophone quartet (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and baritone saxophone).

This composition was created by Jacob Weber, a music education & composition student, class of 2027, at Westminster College in New Wilmington, P.A.
