Words and music by Harry Styles, Mitch Rowland and Thomas Hull, Arranged by Australian composer Kirsten Duncan. Contemporary choral SATB, a cappella, with piano reduction for rehearsal. A4, 12 pages (including covers). Published by Shrub Creative. Item number 2025-01. ISMN 9790900969958.
This choral work by Kirsten Duncan is an arrangement of Canyon Moon, from Harry Styles award-winning, triple-platinum, second studio album Fine Line, released in December 2019.
It is a bittersweet song about a man who travels often and clings fondly to memories of a time under the canyon moon to carry him through homesickness. The melancholy is balanced by the joyous anticipation of going home. The titular canyon and the musical style are references to Laurel Canyon in Southern California, near where Styles lived while writing the album, and the hippie soft-rock musicians who worked there in the 1960s and 70s.
Why choose this arrangement? It is composed for intermediate mixed adult choirs (SATB) without any accompaniment. The voices alternate between jaunty instrumental ba dup bridges and layered harmonies through verses and choruses, building to the nostalgic climax of going home, and lightened with some cheerful whistling and toe-tapping.
Kirsten Duncan has had a lifelong passion for choral singing. Now based in Canberra, Australia, she has performed with Gaudeamus (Judith Clingan), Hamburg International School (ISH) Singers, the choirs of Christ Church St Laurence Sydney (Dr Neil McEwan), The Resonants (Helen Swan) and others. Kirsten started composing choral music in 2015, contributing to the musical community that has been a stabilising thread throughout her life.
