We Need a Little Christmas is a song from the 1966 Broadway musical Mame, with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. It is performed in the first act when Mame Dennis, a wealthy and eccentric woman, suddenly finds herself bankrupt during the Great Depression. To lift everyones spirits, she decides that they need to celebrate Christmas early, decorating the house and spreading joy despite their financial troubles.
The song has since become a holiday standard, covered by numerous artists such as Johnny Mathis, Percy Faith, and the cast of Glee. Its known for its upbeat melody and optimistic lyrics, making it a favorite in Christmas music playlists. While originally tied to Mame, the song has transcended its theatrical origins to become a beloved seasonal classic.
This edition is a simplified version of arrangement I wrote for large percussion ensemble but remains completely in the key of Bb WITH MANY OF THE TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS eliminated. Parts for Drum Set, Timpani and Percussion are optional, but may be used. The FUll arrangement (also available here) Includes 2 additional marimbas, an additional Xylophone, and Crotales.
