Aurora is the dawn of something. Auroras can be a sight without doubt. This Wind Ensemble piece tries to show the great color and the emotion an Aurora can give. The piece begins with colorful mallets and piano. It later turns into this "dangerous mess." This mess shows that Aurora Borealis can still be dangerous for the nearby figures. After this "mess," the piece slowly turns back into a gorgeous chorale-styled piece that reflects the beginning. The piece ends with a beautiful oboe and flute one soli, then the piece ends with very chunky chords, and slowly releases to sustaining low brass.
This piece came into play because my band director, Caleb McDonald, had asked me to create a song for their Wind Symphony (which I'm a part of). This song had me into several dilemmas, but I was able to find some gorgeous chord progressions to get me through! The "world premiere" is going to be in December 2025.

Mason Rhoden is a 14-year-old composer from Ringgold, GA. Rhoden is an excellent clarinet player and is the principal player in his high school band over in Ringgold. He has been selected for many honor band ensembles and marched in several marching band shows, and is a participant in JSU's Band Day. Rhoden wishes to become a widespread composer and a band director in the near future. Rhoden's pieces have been heavily influenced by the well-known composers: Kevin Day, John Mackey, and Frank Ticheli.
