Oft in the Stilly Night is written for Bb Great Highland Bagpipe and Brass Quintet. There is little music available for this instrumentation which is unfortunate as the two combine beautifully, both in traditional and contemporary settings.

The Great Highland Bagpipe tunes to a scale of 9 notes from low G to high A, A tuned to a tonic of around 470-480 Hz as compared to western music A4 of 440 Hz. It is therefore necessary to play a Bb bagpipe chanter when playing this arrangement.
