A ballade-style choral TTBB choral piece based on a poem of the same name I wrote a few years ago. Though the meaning has shifted throughout time for me through new edits/renditions, the sentiment will always have some sort of meaning to appreciate.
Full of rich harmonies, passing melodies, occasional voice crossings, and many part splits, this is a piece for advanced high school or college level groups. Originally composed for Splendid Audacity of Pacific University.
Lyrics (original poem):
Letting go of the little things
that once were and once might have been;
letting the angst and tears flow out like a sigh
after a hard day's work in the sun.
My thoughts turning to mush and jostling about-
returning in time to equilibrium:
like a cold and foggy lake
after the breeze sent ripples through its shimmering surface;
like the kettle, boiling over,
finally being poured into the cup of tea;
like the smell of a familiar sweet,
yet bitter scent
wafting by with nobody in sight;
like someone who loves something...
No.
Like someone who loves themself more than anything,
finally,
I'm letting go.
