Product Description

The classic hymn tune "Winchester New" sets Henry Milman's lyrics about Jesus's final entrance into Jerusalem before his death.

The melody itself has always seemed too one-dimensional, too happy, to portray the ambivalence of the "triumphal" procession and Jesus's final days. Hence I set it in both major and minor to reflect the ambivalence of Jesus' inner life. He enjoyed the acclaim of his beloved people as they strewed palm branches before him. yet at the same time surely he was bracing himself for death, feeling sad and isolated.

All the verses of these dramatic lyrics are evocative, yet a few phrases inspired me as I composed. The angels looking down "with sad and wondering eyes." Jesus himself in "lowly pomp, riding on to die." I tried to express the humility by underscoring this phrase in the music.

The children of Jerusalem's praise and adoration is expressed in parts of the prelude being set in the higher octaves. Finally, the jarring nature of Jesus's triumph, which ends up in his horrific death, is portrayed musically through dissonant chords scored in fourths and fifths.
