This tune goes by many names: "A mule named Sal", "Erie Canal", "Fifteen Years On the Erie Canal", "The Erie Barge Canal" and was written approximately in the middle of the nineteenth century. It commemorates the waterway that helped the state of New York become booming centers of industry prior to the use of engine powered boats. During this time "mule-power" was the primary mode for transferring goods. This piano solo also contains two verses and chorus in the event that the pianist would like to sing along while playing.
