Product Description

Relax to the lilting Caribbean rhythms of Coconut Cream Calypso, a fun and uplifting piano solo that will suit established beginners at the Grade 2 standard (ABRSM).

This piece features legato flattened 7th arpeggios as part of the opening melody, accompanied by the classic syncopated calypso rhythm in the left hand. Be sure to include the stacatto notation, as this will help the syncopation to flow.

The word 'coconut' comes from the old Portuguese and Spanish word 'coco' which means head or skull. This is most likely because coconuts have three grooves in the shell, which are thought to resemble a face.

Calypso is an upbeat genre of Afro-Caribbean music that emerged in Trinidad and Tobago in the mid 1800s. It is related to the call and response style of West African Kaiso music and is known for its witty lyrics and satirical themes.

With that in mind, and once you can play the piece all the way through, try adding a sense of light-hearted humour to your performance in some way. This could be as simple as smiling as you play, or perhaps try making up some fun lyrics that fit with the melody!
