"As Tears Go By" is a song written by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Rolling Stones' manager Andrew Loog Oldham. They gave the song to the 17-year old Marianne Faithfull, who recorded and released it as a single in the United Kingdom in 1964. Her version peaked at number 9 on both the UK and Irish singles charts. Later, the Rolling Stones recorded their own version, which was included on the album 'December's Children (And Everybody's)', reaching number 6 in the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The song was one of the early compositions by Jagger and Richards; previously the Rolling Stones had chiefly been performing American blues and R&B tunes. By one account, Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham locked Jagger and Richards in a kitchen in order to force them to write a song together! The song has since been covered by Nancy Sinatra, The Primitives and Vitamin String Quartet. This arrangement for concert band, created to mark the passing of Marianne Faithfull (1946-2025), includes elements of the original version (with lovely moments for Cor Anglais) and Nancy Sinatra's cover, towards the end.
