The Three Intermezzi, Opus 117, are among Brahms' most delicate and beloved late piano works.
Two of the three are in very dark minor keys, and the one in a major key has a somber middle section. In spite of that, Brahms expresses an ethereal lightness throughout the opus. Oboe players, who love his symphonic solos for their instrument, will enjoy playing these pieces on solo recitals with piano accompaniment. The difficulty level is for advanced students and professionals, and that is as much a comment on the sophistication of the music as it is about the technical difficulties.
