Product Description
Amazing Grace, a Christian hymn published in 1779 and written in 1772 by English clergyman and poet John Newton is possibly the most sung and most recorded hymn ever, being especially popular in the United States where it is used on both religious and secular occasions, including patriotic remembrances.
Newton wrote the words after studying theology, later becoming an ardent abolitionist.
It debuted in print in 1779 in Newton's and William Cowpers collection entitled Olney Hymns. In the United States, "Amazing Grace" became a popular song used by Baptist and Methodist preachers during the Second Great Awakening of the early 19th century, which led to the solid moral convictions on slavery that precipitated the U. S. Civil War.
The text has been associated with more than 20 melodies. In 1835, American composer William Walker set it to the tune known as NEW BRITAIN in shaped-noe format, which is the melody most frequently sung today.Source: Wikipedia.com
