Taupin wrote the lyrics when he was a mere 17 years old, and in his words, "I think the reason it still stands up is because it was real at the time. That was exactly what I was feeling. I was 17 years old and it was coming from someone whose outlook on love or experience with love was totally new and naïve." He wrote out the lyrics in 10 minutes over breakfast at John's mother's house, John wrote the melody in 20, and "we went into the room where the piano was and just hammered it out."
