This Arietta was adapted from the second movement of my Sonata for Bassoon and Piano (2003). Both the Sonata and this Arietta are dedicated to the memory of Francis Poulenc, thus there are many recognizable references to Poulenc's style, especially as it is found in the slow movements of his sonatas for solo wind instruments and piano. The Arietta is tonal, though in a decidedly 20th Century kind of way. It has been performed by students at the college level and also by professionals, thus its difficulty level is advanced intermediate. The duration of the Arietta is 4 and 1/2 minutes.
