Product Description

"Pure Imagination" was written in 1971 for the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Saxophonist Mark Turner reimagined it as a jazz waltz on a 1997 recording (Warner Bros. CD: 9-46793-2), which is the inspiration for this arrangement. Turner's reharmonizations, jazz waltz feel, and ambiguous introduction are applied to the large ensemble format. The interlude section at E features Turner's improvisation in the saxophones before launching into solos for Trumpet 2 and Tenor Sax 1.

Although predominantly a swinging jazz waltz, the drummer should be sensitive to slight changes in feel between loping 3/4 swing, airy contemporary feels, and grooving--but straighter-eighth notes. Rhythm section players should mainly play the ink in the introduction and ending of the tune, or at least capture the spirit implied there. All sections should "go for it" in the shout chorus at K, but be more sensitive to soft dynamics and lighter feels throughout the arrangement.
