Old Russian romance of 1850. Music by A. Gurilev, Lyrics by I. Makarov. This song has an interesting story. Ivan Makarov was a professional coachman who's job was to deliver mail, goodies and sometimes passengers across the vast steppes of Russia. He was an educated man. He wrote lots of poetry. In one of his winter trips he got in the severe snowstorm. He froze to death. His poetry notebook was found with him. This poem was published and became very popular. Russian composer A. Gurilev created this beautiful song based on Ivan Makarov's poetry.

"The Bell rings monotonously, and the road is slightly dusty. And sadly, across the even field, the song of the coachman pours out. So much feeling in that mournful song, so much sadness in the familiar tune, that in my cold, lifeless chest my heart ignited with fire. And I remember other nights, And the native fields and forests, and on my long-dry eyes a tear rushed in like a spark. The Bell rings monotonously, echoing slightly from afar. And my driver fell silent, while the road stretches before me far, far away!"
