Product Description

Baldassare Galuppi (1706 - 1785), also known as il Buranello, after his birthplace on the island of
Burano, in the Venetian lagoon, lived in an age of transition. His early life saw Bach and Handel as
great living composers, while in more mature years he was a contemporary of Haydn and Mozart
As would befit such times, he also wrote music in both the "ancient" and "modern" styles. He can
write concerti grossi in the style of Corelli as well as sonate that are full of Mozartian grace.

This sonata was rendered famous by Arturo Benedetti-Michelangelo's recording of it on the piano
and this is how I first heard it.

Here I present the first movement only.

My version differs from the manuscript, which I have consulted, in that I "double" the values of the
notes to make it easier to read and also to avoid having phrases that last only one or two bars. I have
written out most ornaments, reflecting how I would interpret them. I repeat bars 15 and 16, a repeat
missing in the manuscript, but which seems to me (and to Benedetti-Michelangeli) to be necessary
if we are to maintain the echo which Galuppi requires throughout. Most dynamics are to be found in
the source, though I did try to order them a bit for consistency's sake.
