Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane
Vocal Solo with Keyboard arranged by Ken Litton (ASCAP
Written for the 1943 MGM film musical Meet Me in St. Louis, and sung by Judy Garland, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas has become one of the most beloved songs of all time.
Unhappy with the prospect of moving away from their cherished home, a family contemplates the changes and losses involved, but with some hope for a new beginning.
The lyric underwent significant changes along the way from It may be your last to make the yule-tide gay, Will be near to us no more to Will be near to us once more, Until then well have to muddle through somehow to Hang a shinning star upon the highness bough as well from If the Lord allows to If the fates allow. And, theres a version called Have Yourself a Blessed Little Christmas available elsewhere with the composers blessing.
Here youll find the original (and rare) vocal introduction in a modern musical vocabulary and phrases from both the original versions and the revisions, including the 1957 version done by Frank Sinatra.
This arrangement in Bb is fresh and new, still sparkling with the details that take the imagination to the magic of the season, including a final, nostalgic hint of Jingle Bells.
The upper vocal range falls just one step short of the universal unison voice range (Bb3 - F5)think: Star Spangled Banner without the highest note.
And the accompaniment is easier to play than many with comparatively little movement in the left hand beyond beat three.
