Product Description

A newly discovered waltz by Frédéric Chopin was unveiled on October 28, 2024, at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York. This manuscript, dating back to between 1830 and 1835, was identified as Chopin's first new piece to surface in nearly a century. Found by curator Robinson McClellan among the Arthur Satz Collection, the piece measures just 24 bars and lasts under a minutemuch shorter than most of Chopin's waltzes. Despite its brevity, the work is complete and showcases Chopin's characteristic melodic "tightness."

The waltz stands out for its unique opening, which features stormy, dissonant chords that transition into a melancholic melody, a structure not typically seen in Chopins known repertoire. Experts like Jeffrey Kallberg from the University of Pennsylvania authenticated the piece by examining the ink and paper, which aligned with Chopin's materials from that era. The discovery offers fresh insights into the composer's creative process and poses intriguing questions about the works original purpose and recipient, as Chopin did not sign this manuscript as he often did for pieces he intended to gift.

This find enriches the world of classical music by shedding light on Chopin's early compositional style and musical exploration.
