Product Description

This arrangement for piano trio of Rachmaninov's romance "Melody" is by Svetlana Nikolaevna Velichko, an outstanding Russian pianist who taught at the Accompanist Department of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory from 1961 to 1990. Since September 1990, she has resided, concertized and taught in Anchorage, Alaska. The director of the Van Cliburn Institute has called her one of the best music teachers in the United States."

For various reasons, many of the numerous songs by Russian composers are rarely performed, even for the Russian public. In 2019, Svetlana Velichko began to arrange some of these songs for piano trio (piano, violin, cello) and piano quartet (piano, violin, viola, cello). As of 2024, she has arranged 5 songs by Rachmaninov for piano quartet, 38 songs by Rachmaninoff for piano trio, as well as 6 songs by P. Tchaikovsky, M. Mussorgsky, N. Medtner, A. Glazunov and A. Rubinstein for piano trio.

Svetlana Velichkos main goal for these arrangements is that this wonderful music be heard not only in Russia but on all continents. She would like to believe that, having overcome the language barrier, these miniature masterpieces will delight both instrumentalists as well as lovers of classical music on all continents.

No notes of these arrangements have been changed from the originals of the composers. In addition the tonality, corresponding to the emotional mood of the songs, is unchanged. Rachmaninoff said: "my music is only emotions." The other composers could also say the same about the music of their songs.

Svetlana Velichko says: When choosing from the piano part the voices for the other instruments, I concluded that Rachmaninov composed it as symphonic music, and recorded it as an arrangement for piano. That is why I was extremely pleased with the comment of one Youtube listener that it sounds as if Rachmaninov himself arranged it.

Video recordings of the performance of this and other arrangements by Svetlana Velichko (piano), Marcio Candido (violin) and Cherry Kim (cello) are posted on Youtube and can be found by searching for Svetlana Velichko. The sheet music for the arrangements can be found on SheetMusicDirect.com by searching for Svetlana Velichko.
