Product Description

Araguaco Coabey (2009) for Clarinet in Eb, Fotuto (Conch Shell), Ocarina and Percussion (Marimba, Log Drum, Güiro, Maracas, Wind Chimes, Rain Stick, Sleigh Bells) was written for and dedicated to the Duo Avanzando.

Aboriginal tribes from South America (the Orinoco region) populated the caribbean more than 2200 years ago. Their evolution and development gave rise to the Taino; the first indigenous people the european colonizers encountered.

The Taino already had its own well established society, religion, language and music when the european arrived. Among its many cultural manifestations where songs and dances which the spaniards called araguacos, in reference to the arawak idiom used.

And so, Araguaco Coabey is an imaginery Taino musical ceremony. Coabey, according to Taino religious beliefs, signifies a region or island where the dead go to find peace. The work also evokes a nightingales musical ritual, that is, Yahubabayael, the taino/arawak word for nightingale is chanted throughout the piece by the performers, as well as Atabey (mother goddess). The Ocarina alludes to the nightingales song simbolizing the messenger of distant worlds and good omens. In the caribbean the nightingale is also synonymous to song and poetry.
