Product Description

Irving Burgie (AKA Lord Burgess) assembled this tune from bits and pieces of Caribbean folk music. Athough he was born in Brooklyn, his mother was from Barbados, and he took that island heritage seriously, becoming a great composer of Caribbean music. He composed eight of the 11 songs on Harry Belafonte's 1956 album "Calypso," on which this song appeared. He ended up writing a total of 34 songs for Belafonte.
It has been covered by a host of other artists, including Jimmy Buffett, Sam Cooke and Carly Simon. The Kingston Trio took their name from the mention of Kingston, Jamaica in the song's lyric ("I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town.")
