This is a contemporary and new setting of Psalm 23, The Lord is My Shepherd. The biblical text is from the 1928 U.S. Book of Common Prayer. The piece uses modern harmonies to evoke the intimacy of the text, and contains beautiful surprises to keep us attentive to the message and the parable of the Good Shepherd. The melody moves from syllabic detail portraying a contemplative narration, to a soaring melody conveying hopefulness and expectant care. This is enhanced through complimentary key changes and contrasting colours in tone and rhythm. The work has a controlled tempo but is presented as liberamente e molto espressivo reminding us that the text contains a deeply personal message for each one of us, inviting us to share the hope and freedom it bestows.
The piece could be also be accompanied by organ or easily arranged for string quartet.
