Product Description

'Sanctuary!' is the score for the most dramatic scene in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996). In this scene, Quasimodo breaks free from his chains to rescue Esmeralda, and then ascends the cathedral where he claims sanctuary for them both. 'Sanctuary!' makes extensive use of a Latin choir (Kyrie Eleison, Dies irae, Judex Crederis, Liberate Domine, Gloria) and also references musical motifs from The Bells of Notre Dame and Out There. All of these elements are masterfully woven together in Menken's signature thematic style.

Many consider the score for The Hunchback of Notre Dame to be Menkens magnum opus, with 'Sanctuary!' standing out as the films most ambitious sequence, both musically and visually. Danny Troobs orchestrations further elevate the score, blending Menkens modern Broadway sensibility with rich, symphonic textures. The score earned Menken an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score.

This arrangement for solo piano is a reduction of the full orchestra, and is suited for Intermediate+ pianists. Chords are marked throughout. An additional staff is added as needed, indicating key instrumental parts that could not be fully condensed into the piano staves (serving as a reference for the performer).
