The tune, Maryland, My Maryland, is based on the traditional German song O, Tannenbaum or fir tree. The former version in Common Time was adopted by the State of Maryland as its State Song until 1921 when it was abandoned because of its association with divisive political and racial divisions in the Civil War. It has also become a jazz standard and this arrangement, like some other versions, retains a martial and marching feel with the fanfares.
