The lyrics: "Frère Jacques, frère Jacques, dormez-vous? dormez-vous? sonnez les matines, sonnez les matines, ding-ding-dong, ding-ding-dong" tell the story of a sleepy friar who has failed to wake up for morning prayers. This version for violin duet preserves some aspects of the round, while also elaborating on the arrangement. The top (student) part is easy since it simply consists of several repetitions of the melody, while the teacher part is more developed and gives interest to the performance as the piece develops.
