Product Description

A trio for alto saxophone, vibraphone and piano, Hermes in Retrograde was written for and premiered by Marshall Taylor, Christopher Hanning, and Sam Hsu. The soundworld is influenced by 50s Jazz and the metrical world of the piece comes from my interests in the music of the ars subtilior, which I was peforming quite a lot of at that time. The titles of the work are heavily influenced by my readings in Hermetic philosophy, especially the studies by Frances Yates. If anything, this work is a synchretic mashup of a cool jazz aesthetic that never was and a world of ideas that doesn't truly exist, creating a surreal landscape.
