Product Description

"Procession of the Sardar" was composed in 1894 by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859-1935). The melody is derived from Russian composer Ippolitov-Ivanov's Caucasian Sketches, Suite No. 1, Op. 10, Movement 4. In these variations, the opening eight-bar theme provided the inspiration for the work. Armenians identify with the theme as a patriotic song "Zeitountsiner" or "Arevn Yelav, Zeitountsiner" (The sun rose, people of Zeitoun).

In this arrangement for piano, the five variations in D major are a step lower, suited for the intermediate player. The original key for orchestra is E major. Techniques of motivic development include changes in: style, tonality, harmonization, meter (5/4) and tempo. The last variation is an homage to the Armenian composer Komitas Vardapet (1869-1935), based on his Dance #1 from Six Dances for Piano.

Extensive background notes provided.
Duration: 4:38
