I was asked by the fine pianist Lawrence Axelrod, along with other composers, to compose a mazurka for piano. I wrote six, perhaps not always following the strict definition of a mazurka, and subsequently arranged them for a standard size symphony orchestra. The titles of the movements are "Fourths," "Eccentric Dance," "Chopin," "Memorial," "Fast, Slow," and "Finale." Since the mazurka is a dance these pieces could be suitable for ballet.
