In the compositional process for this work, the overall desired effect was to paint an aural picture of a spiritual journey with moments of calmness, excitement of discovery, dramatic manifestations, and positively affecting others. Almost as difficult as finding the best title for the piece was deciding on a cover illustration. Candlelight proved to be the most appropriate, especially after considering the scriptural verses that inspired the title, Matthew 5:15-16: Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
As are many of my compositions, this work comprises a personal musical journal entry. One week during a trip to California with an Air Force concert band was the bulk of the composition. During that tour I decided to be as cheerful and kind as possible to everyone. The
results were magical! Not only was I happy the entire time, despite some difficulties and setbacks, but others were as well, and the trip was a pure delight.
Duration is approximately five minutes, and though not generally technically challenging for any part, endurance is demanding.
Preliminary sketches for this piece began 15 Dec 2022, originally intended as a tribute to a horn player. A different sketch won out for the tribute, and this composition took on a different character and meaning. The bulk of the work was done on that trip in California, to which this music is a memorable soundtrack. It was finished on 8 March 2023.
