Evanescent is heavily influenced by Chinese musical idioms to honour the memory of the composer's deceased grandmothers. The piece begins with bated breath, transitioning to a wistful theme on the bass flute. Out of the grief, a bright melody emerges, recalling the innocence of childhood. The return of the first theme overlaps with the second, turning the carefree tune into a bittersweet recollection. The introduction returns like a sigh, and the time I had with my grandmothers vanishes into silence.
