Product Description

This song originally was a hymn written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1900, to which his brother John composed the music for the lyrics. The hymn was a prayer of thanksgiving to God for faithfulness and freedom. The image is one of going from slavery to freedom: as in the book of Exodus in the Bible, and also as African-American black slaves after the Civil War. The hymn has been featured in over 40 Christian Hymnals over the years. However, as of late, the popularity of the song has increased - and it is now often referred to as "The Black National Anthem." This arrangement is true to the solemn majestical nature of the original hymn, and each of the 3 string instruments in the Trio gets a rotation at voicing the melody.
