2nd Place Winner in the 2025 Music International Grand Prix Composition Competition, A Pukwudgie Tale (A Tale of Mischief, Mayhem and Rebirth) is a mysterious and whimsical guitar quartet inspired by the Native American legend of the Pukwudgie, the little man of the woods known for its ability to vanish, shapeshift, and wield mischievous magic. Set in D minor and written in common time, this 3:27-minute piece is crafted for advanced classical guitarists and features an array of expressive techniques, including very fast scale passages, pizzicato, slides, harmonics, trills, glissandos, percussive hits, and dramatic tempo changes. The interplay between the four parts brings the legend vividly to life, with sudden shifts in texture and character that reflect the Pukwudgies playful trickery and darker, more dangerous tendencies. From eerie, suspended moments to bursts of chaotic motion, the music captures a spirit both magical and menacing. A Pukwudgie Tale invites the ensemble to explore rich storytelling through dynamic contrast, rhythmic precision, and tonal color, conjuring a soundscape where folklore and fantasy intertwine.
