An elderly lady sits at the front of the music jam in Castle Rock, Colorado, playing a huge instrument. It looks like a giant wooden teardrop with 67 strings all across it like the inside of a piano. Is it a zither? No, she says - it's a bandura. It's the traditional bardic instrument of Ukraine. In fact it's such a strong symbol of Ukrainian national identity, that the Soviets didn't allow it to be played. So Oksana proudly learned the bandura only after she moved to the USA. She invited me to her home, and into the Ukrainian diaspora, where we played many of these tunes on bandura and violin. Here's my arrangement of "Little Polka" for two violins.
