The four fugues were composed as part of Schumann's studies in counterpoint that he undertook with his wife Clara in 1845. During this period, Clara also composed several fugues, including some on themes by Robert. Schumann's Op. 72 Fugues demonstrate his mastery of the fugal form and his passion for the genre, which is also evident in other works like his Six Fugues on the Name "BACH," Op. 60. Overall, the Four Fugues, Op. 72 are an important example of Schumann's contrapuntal writing and his exploration of the fugue as a musical form.
