Arranged by composer, arranger, trombonist John Yao and commissioned by Arturo OFarrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, this big band chart is an altered blues form in 5/4 time with a driving groove and a hard-hitting style. Following the solos, the spotlight shifts to the drums supported by ensemble hits building up to a solo bass break, which sets up a rousing mambo section to close out the chart. Using intricate section writing and difficult lines, Challenge Within is a high energy chart that will push the limits of even the most advanced ensembles.
