This set of variations is a symbolic memorial to the RMS Titanic. The variations are scored for string quartet and based on the hymn "Nearer, My God, to Thee"; this is based on the legend that a string quartet played the hymn as the Titanic sank. This may also be played by a string orchestra with the double basses doubling the cello part. Each variation represents a different part of the Titanic's doomed voyage.
