Manhattan Beach was a New York summer resort popular around the turn of the 18th/19th centuries. Sousa wrote this march (based in part on one he had written 18 years earlier) while performing there in 1893. Now it's a New York City neighborhood of the same name. Things dicovered on the way to learning other things: Sousa dedicated "Manhattan Beach" to the resort's proprietor, entrpreneur/developer Austin ... Corbin (also big in banking and president of the Long Island Rail Road. Apprently no relation to the arranger. Good thing, too; he was a raging anti-Semite (he wouldn't allow Jews at the resort) and was instrumental in cheating the Montauk native American tribe outy of their land.
