This popular "work song" from Russian folk history has been used to depict "hard work" in movies, cartoons and plays. Here it is presented for the early intermediate pianist. The sailors on the boat can be heard singing their "song of work," very softly as the boat approaches the people on the land. As the boat gets closer, the dynamics increase in intensity and as the boat passes away, the dynamics decrease to reflect the passing of the ship. Some pedalling and phrasing suggestions are given as well.
