Product Description

This traditional Québéquois chantey, based on the Scottish tune, Hieland Laddie, is a flexible arrangement for 3-7 ringers and 3 octaves of handbells, choirchimes, or Boomwhackers. 14 bells are required. This lively secular folk tune is great for school and community ensembles and can be adapted to the ability level of ringers and the size of the ensemble. Special techniques can be adapted to suit your situation. Malleting, Plucking, and/or Thumb Damping can be used to achieve the staccato effect in the bass.  Can be used to accompany singing.

This logging chantey comes from the Great Lakes and waterways of Canada and the northeastern United States and is based on a tune brought over by Scottish settlers. A "donkey" is a steam engine, often mounted on a barge, used to help load timber and other heavy items onto cargo ships.

Were you ever in Quebec
Stowing timber on the deck?
Where there's a king with a golden crown
Riding on a donkey.

(Chorus)
Hey, ho! Away we go!
Donkey riding, donkey riding.
Hey, ho! Away we go!
Riding on a donkey.

Were you ever off the Horn
Where it's always fine and warm?
Seeing the lion and unicorn
Riding on a donkey.

(Chorus)

Were you ever in Cardiff Bay?
Where the folks all shout, "Hurray!"
Here comes John with three years' pay
Riding on a donkey.

(Chorus)
