This work is a re-arrangement of the first movement of my first string quartet composed back in 1997.

Octatonic is a mode which is entirely regular in its distribution of intervals - tone semitone tone semitone etc and is also known as the mode of limited transposition.

I have left the piece without a key signature - but the clarinet is indeed suitably transposed as required.
