Simpson was a Canadian pastor and writer from the 19th to early 20th centuries. He also founded the Christian & Missionary Alliance. This hymn came about in 1904 but was officialy published in 1936, over a decade after Simpson's death. Sections A and C are the verse. Sectionbs B and D arethe refrain. A modulation to a new key occurs towards the end of section B with the help of an Italian augmented sixth chord.
