In September of 2023, our mens' Bible study breakfasts, in four weeks, tackled the Book of Esther. Then came the horror of October 7th in Israel and I was compelled to compose THE SONG OF ESTHER as a statement against antisemitism. When Xerxes (bass) was king of Persia, called Ahasu-e'rus ( not poetic) I wrote this religious operetta,which is dead serious about how Esther ( soprano) is taken as a queen and she risks her life to save her people. Evil, personified by Haman (tenor,) plans a pogram of all Persian Jews, because Mordechai , Esther's uncle ( no solo)will not bow before him. The 10 chapters of the Book of Esther come alive in this piece, which I hope will be sung in synagaogues along with the reading of Esther at Purim.
