Product Description

"Personent Hodie" is a medieval Christmas carol first published in the 1582 Finnish songbook Piae Cantiones. The Latin text of the song is probably a musical parody of an earlier 12th-century song written in honor of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of Russia, sailors, and children. The song's melody is glorious and ebullient, consisting of bright, resolute three-note phrases. It is highly regarded as a professional and is frequently associated with the Feast of the Holy Innocents. Various artists have arranged and recorded the song, including bass guitarist/composer Chris Squire and the English Baroque Choir. The melody is known for its lively and triumphant manner, making it a popular piece in Christmas carol services.
