Introducing Notation
Worksheets for teaching young children

Using 12 imaginative, entertaining and carefully graded songs from the DaCapo Songbook, this resource contains activity cards for the music teacher to print. We deal with all the concepts needed to fully understand how music notation is constructed.

The resource gives the teacher (Kodaly / Solfa enthusiast) a wealth of worksheets to use in a variety of ways. We recommend that the sheets are used as part of an active music making session and that you only use one sheet in a lesson, that each sheet is used for one purpose only and that you dont spend too long on each work sheet. They are not designed as homework sheets.

By the end of the course, the children will be able to:

- Sing in tune
- Clap and recognise rhythm patterns aurally
- Sing and handsign in solfa
- Identify music from solfa
- Have a basic understanding of beats in a bar
- Read songs within a small vocal range from a reduced stave with a moveable Do

The songs chosen (from the DaCapo Songbook) are very old folk songs which have been reworded to suit the children of today. Children have small vocal ranges and this means that when they sing, initially the best songs are those with only two or three notes. Gradually we add songs with a wider note span to extend the range of the childs voice.

The rhythmic element of the songs has also been selected to help the children to sing accurately, understand the rhythmic patterns and begin to identify them.

We would like to thank the many people who have supported DaCapo and influenced us in all aspects of education and music making.
