"Air on the G String", also known as "Air for G String" and "Celebrated Air" originates from the 2nd movement "Air" of Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major. Originally written for 4 voices (2 Violins, Violas, and Basso Continuo), it features interweaving melody lines of the high strings contrast with the pronounced rhythmic drive in the bass.

Why is called 'on the G string'? The Air was first popularied by Violinist August Wilhelmj (1871) who transposed the key down to C major and an octave, allowing the solo violin to play the entire melody on its lowest string, the G string.
