Program Notes

Sleepers Wake is an iconic choral prelude composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the most influential composers in history. This piece, first written in 1731, was created as part of a set of preludes and fugues intended to be used as teaching aids for students of organ playing. Bach was masterful in his use of musical symbolism to express religious ideas and became renowned for his ability to express complex concepts through music.  In this particular work, Bach has crafted a persuasive argument for awakening to the joy of human existence. Beginning with a slow harmonic transition that builds to a powerful cadence, the music is accusatory and urgent, calling out to us to wake up to the beauty of life before it's too late. The melody is triumphant and resolute as it builds a series of changes that guarantee our attention: from tension to resolution, darkness to light, loneliness to union.  Bach has managed to encapsulate his deepest feelings for living an earnest and focused life within this composition. It is a reminder to us all, to open our eyes to the possibilities around us and to live a life of intention. The beauty of this prelude, created over 287 years ago, is timeless and its call to attention is as relevant today as ever.
